National Access Awareness Week - May 28 – June 3, 2017

Posted on Wednesday May 17, 2017

Proclamation:

“Whereas one week each year is recognized across Canada as National Access Awareness Week and is an opportunity to highlight accessibility awareness;

And Whereas the County of Northumberland is committed to accessibility;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That Northumberland County Council declares the week of May 28 to June 3, 2017 to be National Access Awareness Week in the County of Northumberland.”

Background:

The Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee (NAAC) is once again seeking County Council’s endorsement and support to proclaim the week May 28 to June 3, 2017 as National Access Awareness Week in the County of Northumberland.

National Access Awareness Week was first established across Canada in 1988 following Rick Hanson's 40,000 km Man in Motion World Tour. Typically occurring in the first week of June, National Access Awareness Week is an opportunity to highlight accessibility awareness and encourage all Canadians to think about the barriers people with disabilities face, and to find ways to help remove them.

During of week of May 28 to June 3, 2017 the NAAC is planning to raise awareness by leveraging the County’s intranet to distribute posters and promotional material to all County staff. We are also hosting a “Learn To Be A Sighted Guide” workshop through the CNIB for County Council and interested County staff.

County Council’s endorsement and proclamation would provide needed exposure and support and would affirm the County’s commitment to creating an accessible Northumberland County.
