Northumberland County and Habitat for Humanity Northumberland partner on the delivery of home repair funding

Posted on Monday June 04, 2018

Cobourg, ON – June 1, 2018– Today Northumberland County announced additional funding for the Renovate Northumberland program, which was first launched in 2017. An additional $200,000 will be available for eligible local homeowners to complete urgent repairs and accessibility upgrades. The program is, once again, being delivered in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Northumberland.

“We are very pleased to be offering the Renovate Northumberland program again this year in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Northumberland,” states County Director of Community & Social Services Lisa Horne. “Our community housing and homelessness strategies are based on a Housing First approach that emphasizes preventive measures to stabilize people’s housing. Renovate Northumberland is an important component of these housing stability strategies, helping people to make critical repairs so that they can remain in their own home. We look forward to delivering further impact for our residents through this year’s program.”

The Renovate Northumberland program enables eligible homeowners to access interest-free, forgivable loans up to a maximum of $10,000 to complete urgent home repairs, as well as grants up to a maximum of $5,000 to reduce physical barriers in order to make a residence more accessible. In 2017 Renovate Northumberland provided financial support for home renovations to 19 homeowners, 14 of whom were seniors in Northumberland County. Among some of the completed projects were 8 roof repair/replacements, 5 furnace repair/replacements and 4 accessibility projects.

“We are thrilled to be working with Northumberland County again this year to deliver this critical program to homeowners across the county,” indicated Habitat for Humanity Northumberland Executive Director Meaghan Macdonald. “Habitat’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. We truly believe that, in order to achieve this vision, individuals and families need to be able to access all types of housing supports. Renovate Northumberland is a program that works in partnership with Habitat’s home repair affordable loan program, ReNew It. With the two programs working together we can ensure that those most in need of urgent home repairs can access support to maintain a safe and decent place to live.”
