The Northumberland PRTD Project is a tourism industry-led initiative that undertook a comprehensive assessment of Northumberland's strengths and weaknesses as a tourist destination with the objective of improving Northumberland's performance as a tourist destination.
The Premier-ranked Tourist Destination model was developed by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism to help destinations across Ontario define their competitive positions. The project evaluated and inventoried Northumberland County's tourism sector and provided information to guide in the economic development of the tourism industry. The project identified:

Northumberland County Council approved the Premier-Ranked Tourist Destination Project recommendations on September 16th, 2009. With the research phase of the project concluded, the project has now moved into the destination development phase. During this phase, the PRTD recommendations will be further explored, strategies for their implementation will be considered, and a Destination Development Strategy and Action Plan will be developed.
