Notice to Residents Regarding Noxious Weeds

The main purpose of the Weed Control Act R.S.O. 1990, is to reduce the impact of noxious weeds on the industries of agriculture and horticulture.  Primarily this act applies to agricultural and horticultural lands that generate income or other benefits to agriculture; this exclude lawns, gardens and private areas for personal enjoyment and leisure.

Under the Weed Control Act, R.S.O. 1990, Chapter W.5 Sections 3, 13, 16 and 23, you are requested to destroy all noxious weeds on your property.

In Urban Areas
Sections 3, 13, 16, and 18 do not apply to noxious weeds or weed seeds that are far enough away from any land used for agricultural purposes, as they do not interfere with that use.

All properties within:

  • Municipality of Brighton
  • Municipality of Trent Hills
  • Township of Cramahe
  • Township of Alnwick/Haldimand
  • Township of Hamilton
  • Municipality of Port Hope

are hereby requested to be in compliance with the Weed Control Act by the 15th day of June of the current year and throughout the season.

Upon failure to comply the Municipality may enter upon said lands and have the weeds destroyed charging the cost against the land, as set out in the Weed Act.  The co-operation of all citizens is earnestly solicited.

For all other reported locations of noxious weeds on private lawns, gardens, parks and other private areas used for personal enjoyment and leisure, please contact your local municipality for further information related to the control of noxious weeds as required under the provisions of the local municipal Property Standards By-law.
