Need emergency housing?
Transition House, located at 10 Chapel St., Cobourg, offers temporary emergency housing for people in need and assists its residents in securing more permanent accommodations. You can contact Transition House at 905-377-0378.
The Salvation Army can provide one to four nights emergency shelter for single men. Contact 905-373-9440 or 1-866-865-0768.
Are you fleeing abuse and need emergency shelter?
There are two emergency shelters for women. Northumberland Services for Women can be reached at 905-372-0746 or 1-800-263-3757. Alderville Women´s Shelter can be reached at 905-352-3708 or 1-800-388-5171. Both agencies also provide counselling and support services.
Need some help finding a place to rent?
The Help Centre maintains a county-wide housing registry of rental vacancies. You may call the Telemessage listing at 905-372-4380 for the Port Hope and Cobourg Area. You may also call the Campbellford Help Centre at 1-886-873-5356 for information on the Trent Hills and Campbellford Area. Need some help to pay last month´s rent and/or utility deposits?
If you are in receipt of social assistance (Ontario Works or Ontario Disability Support) you may be eligible for Community Start Up or discretionary benefits to assist with these costs. Contact the Homelessness Caseworker at 905-372-6846 or 1-800-354-7051, ext 2490 to see if you are eligible.
The Salvation Army, Family Services, may also be able to help with a loan through their Rent Bank. A signed repayment schedule is required. The Salvation Army can be reached at 905-373-9440 or 1-866-865-0768.
Need emergency assistance with an extraordinary shelter expense, such as a utility or heating bill?
If you are receiving social assistance, there are discretionary funds available to assist in some circumstances. Contact the Homelessness Caseworker at 905-372-6846 or 1-800-354-7051, ext 2490 to discuss your situation.
If you are not in receipt of assistance, the Utility Community Trust, administered through The Help Centre, may be available to help with utility costs. Call 905-372-2646 or toll free at 1-888-698-3382.
Need some help to work things out with the landlord?
Take advantage of the Trusteeship or Housing Advocacy programs, offered by The Help Centre, The Salvation Army and/or Transition House Coalition of Northumberland. The Northumberland Community Legal Centre can provide legal advice to low-income individuals relating to landlord/tenant issues. The Legal Centre can be reached at 905-373-4464 or 1-800-850-7882. Or if need be, try contacting the Ontario Rental Housing Tribunal at 1-800-332-3234.
