Rent Supplement

The Rent Supplement Program offers private landlords the opportunity to play a role in the provision of social housing. This program offers eligible RGI applicants accommodation in non-profit and privately owned buildings. The tenant pays the rent based on his or her income and the landlord receives a supplement for the balance of the market rent. The landlord enters into a Rent Supplement agreement specifying that Housing Services will:

  • refer potential RGI tenants to the landlord
  • calculate the rent to be paid by the tenant to the landlord
  • pay the rent supplement to the landlord.

The landlord also completes the lease agreement with the tenant and the standard relationship between the landlord and tenant applies.

How To Apply?
Interested landlords should contact Housing Services at 905-372-3329 ext. 2304 for more information and a Rent Supplement Application Form. Once reviewed and approved, an arrangement is made to inspect the unit and negotiate the rent. If the unit meets the eligibility criteria, an agreement for the Rent Supplement Program is negotiated with the landlord. The final step is the selection of tenants from the RGI centralized waiting list for the new rental unit.

Supportive Housing
Under the Strong Community Rent Supplement Program, Housing Services offers a number of supportive housing units in Northumberland County. Supportive housing units are those that are occupied by recipients of formal support services that help them to maintain tenancy and live independently in the community. Community agencies such as Campbellford Community Mental Health Centre, Campbellford Association for Community Living and Lakeshore Counselling identify and refer prospective applicants.
