Homelessness Services

Finding solutions to homelessness goes much further than simply finding shelter for people living on the streets, in emergency shelters or temporarily with family or friends.

Addressing relative homelessness, those at risk of becoming homeless, is as much of a concern. These are people paying a high percentage of their income toward their basic shelter costs that puts them in danger of losing their homes, heating source or having their hydro shut off.

There are a number of programs and services in Northumberland County working to reduce the level of homelessness. Northumberland County Community and Social Services has provided funding through the Provincial Homelessness Initiative Fund (PHIF) to a number of agencies, including The Help Centre, The Salvation Army Community and Family Services and Transition House Coalition of Northumberland. The objective of PHIF is to move people from the streets to emergency accommodation and from emergency to permanent accommodation as well as to prevent homelessness by supporting the retention of permanent accommodations.
