It's at the core of everything we do!
The inability to read and write affects every aspect of daily living. And the lack of literacy skills is proving to be the #1 barrier to employment. Without a doubt, the ability to function in today's world of work requires these skills.
To help recognize if you have difficulties with literacy, you will be asked at the time of application, to take a short language and math screening test. It's not a question of passing or failing this test, but it's a matter of finding out whether you may need help. It is important to note that test results have no effect on eligibility for assistance whatsoever.
If it looks like literacy skills may be a barrier to getting a job, you may then be referred to a literacy professional for a more in-depth literacy assessment. Sometimes this will happen right away, but sometimes it may be better for you to participate in other employment assistance activities first. It will depend on what the best plan is for you.
If only you had that high school diploma!
Well, it's never too late to do something about it. To get those last few credits to get your Grade 12 or equivalency, you have a few options - upgrading at the community college or Centre for Individual Studies campus nearest you!
Speak to your caseworker to determine which option would best meet your needs and your Participation Agreement will then be updated to include Academic Upgrading. And be sure to inquire about having those related expenses covered.
You have the skills that the employer is looking for, but do you have difficulty communicating that because English is not your first language? In fact, could it be that communication is a problem for you in most situations?
Well, there's no time like the present to start tackling this language barrier! Speak to your caseworker to determine what options are available in your area to start learning English as your second language, and make this your next step in your action plan. And be sure to inquire about having those related expenses covered.
Participants are encouraged and supported to make such a commitment. For some, this may mean upgrading to get their Grade 12 or equivalency. But for others, it means attending a Job-Specific Skills Training program. In response to local labour market trends, Community & Social Services has teamed up with various local training providers to co-ordinate, sponsor and deliver such training programs such as Smart Serve, CPR, First Aid, WHMIS, computer skills or job-related life skills.
